My wormery arrived today, it came with a lot of paper bedding which must be kept moist, the worms were in a little bag made of sacking and buried in a ball of bedding. I have emptied them out into one of the bins on top of all the bedding and they have had a tablespoon of food that came with the wormery, I have to feed them again in four days, the food looks like brown sand, they like grit and i can give them crushed eggshell which will aid their digestion.
The worms are called Dendras and are different from the ordinary garden worm, the natural habitat for Dendras is in the leafy waste of the forest floor, they don't burrow like garden worms, they are ferocious eaters and can eat half their own body weight of waste each day.
The worms will breed during the months from spring through to autumn, so if i keep them happy and healthy they will supply me with compost throught the year, but they will slow down in the winter.
I have put them in the garden shed, they don't like to be to hot or cold and they like the dark.
My seeds still haven't arrived, i am looking forward to starting some of them off indoors so i can plant them out when the weather gets warmer. Still waiting for my raspberry canes.
